Through a half-open wrought-iron gate, a garden glimpsed rather than fully seen: sun-dappled paths, overgrown roses, the distant suggestion of a stone fountain. The composition plays on the viewer's desire to enter, using careful perspective and selective focus to draw the eye deep into a space that remains, tantalisingly, just out of reach. The painting is an invitation that is never quite fulfilled.
